The only Western nation that has always been known as one of the main centers of production for rugs is Russia. The artifacts of Caucasia and Central Asia, in fact, have had an enormous influence not only on the international market of the carpet, but also on the very culture of the people of Russia. The appreceation of Caucasian rugs in Western Europe, which started in the 1880s, brought a burst of innovation in environments saturated with Savonnerie, which were soon replaced by these rugs that were opposed to a strong use of color, and a more wild and independent character. The carpets are characterized by geometric motifs combined with stylized floral motifs, as well as bright, contrasting colors. Occasionally you will find pictures of animals always represented in extremely stylized forms.
